Tree Trimming & Pruning in Asheville
A well-pruned mountain tree is a different animal than a well-pruned suburban tree. Wind comes off the ridgeline with nothing to stop it, ice loads show up most winters, and the goal isn't a round lollipop β it's a structurally sound tree that sails wind instead of catching it. That's the pruning we do.
Why Pruning Matters More in the Mountains
Helene was the extreme case, but every year the Asheville area gets wind events, ice storms, and heavy wet snow that load canopies the way no coastal or Piedmont tree ever feels. A dense, unthinned crown acts like a sail; gusts push the whole tree, and on our slopes the failure point is usually the root plate, not the stem. Once a root plate shifts on a mountainside, that tree is a removal β a $2,500 job that a $400 thinning would have prevented.
The other mountain factor is ice. Wet snow and freezing rain stick to every twig. Crowns that were already carrying deadwood β the snags, hangers, and widow-makers that accumulate in any unmanaged hardwood β fail first, and they fail on the way down onto roofs, vehicles, and power drops. Deadwooding before winter is cheap insurance, and around here it pays out most years.
The Pruning Work We Do
- Crown thinning. Selective removal of live branches β usually 10β25% of the canopy on a mature hardwood β to let wind pass through instead of around. Done properly, you barely notice the visual difference; the tree keeps its shape and its shade, but the sail shrinks.
- Deadwooding. Removal of dead, dying, and broken branches throughout the crown. The single highest-value pruning service in WNC, especially before ice season. We flag anything that looks like future storm debris.
- Clearance pruning. Branches over the roof (a foot or two of clearance saves your shingles and your gutters), over driveways, away from service drops, and up off the ground where mowing and sightlines need it.
- Structural (young-tree) pruning. The cheapest decade of tree care is the first one. Correcting co-dominant leaders, bad branch angles, and crossing growth on a 15-year-old oak is a fraction of what cabling or removing that same tree at 40 costs. If you planted trees after Helene, this is the year to start training them.
- Restoration pruning. For trees that survived storm damage or past bad cuts β including topped trees someone else left behind. We can't put wood back, but we can restructure the crown over a few seasons so the tree closes wounds and rebuilds a sane architecture.
- View pruning. A very Asheville service: careful window-opening through canopy so you keep your Blue Ridge view without butchering the trees that frame it. Done right, it looks like the forest did it itself.
What We Won't Do: Topping
Ask three tree companies about topping and you'll hear three versions of "it depends." Ours doesn't depend. Topping β cutting main stems back to stubs β is banned on our crews, full stop. It starves the tree, invites decay into every cut, and produces a thicket of weakly attached epicormic shoots that grow back heavier and more dangerous than what you started with. Every topped hardwood we've seen in Asheville became a removal within a decade, usually at the worst possible time. If a company offers to "just top it," get a second opinion. If the tree genuinely can't be made safe at its height, we'll tell you to remove it β and show you why.
