Land Clearing in Asheville
Building on a mountain lot is a different sport — the "flat spot" doesn't exist yet, the driveway needs a bench cut through rock and rhododendron, and the county wants a defensible space plan before they'll sign off. Clearing a Western North Carolina parcel takes equipment, judgment, and a crew that knows which trees to take and which to leave.
The Kinds of Clearing We Do
- Homesite prep. Selective clearing for a house footprint, drain field reserve, and usable yard — with attention to western views, afternoon shade, and the trees that make a mountain homesite worth building on. We flag keepers before the first machine moves; nobody has ever regretted keeping the big white oak off the deck corner.
- Driveway and access cuts. The bench cut for your driveway, cleared sightlines at the road, and turnarounds. We coordinate with your grading contractor so trees come out in the sequence that lets their equipment work, not against it.
- Rhododendron, laurel, and mountain brush. Ask anyone who's tried to clear a north-slope thicket by hand: rhododendron is a job for machines and sharp steel, not loppers. We grub it out root-mat and all, or mulch it in place depending on your plan for the slope.
- Pasture and field reclamation. Old homesteads across Candler, Alexander, and the Hominy Valley going back into production — clearing volunteer saplings, reclaiming fencerows, opening up grown-over fields.
- Post-Helene lot recovery. Storm-thrashed parcels that never got fully cleaned: downed timber, tangled blowdown, and debris that's been sitting since September 2024. We clear it, chip it, and haul it — see our debris page for the haul-off side.
- Defensible space and fuel reduction. Creating and maintaining fire-wise buffer zones around mountain homes — limbing up near structures, clearing ladder fuels, spacing canopy where the slope allows. Insurance companies increasingly ask for it; we document what was done.
Selective vs. Total: The Question That Matters
Total clearing is easy: everything goes, and the hillside pays for it for decades in erosion, heat load, and the kind of barren moonscape that gives mountain development a bad name. Selective clearing is the craft: take the dangerous, the diseased, the crowded, and the useless; keep the sound, the beautiful, and the ones holding your slope together. On steep ground, trees are a lot of the slope's structural integrity — pulling all of them invites the kind of erosion and slumping that costs more than the clearing saved.
Our default is selective, marked with flagging tape before work starts, and walked with you if you're on site. If you want total clearing, we'll do it — with honest advice about drainage, replanting timelines, and what the neighbors' view will look like afterward.
Mountain Logistics
- Equipment matched to the slope. Tracked machines for off-road work, compact skidders where the ground is fragile, winch-assist on grades past what tracks alone hold. Nothing with wheels goes where our mountain lots go.
- Erosion-conscious sequencing. We clear in passes that keep ground cover on the slope as long as possible, work uphill to downhill where grades demand it, and leave slash on contour lines if your erosion-control plan calls for it.
- Timber disposition. Marketable logs can be sold or milled; firewood-size material splits and stacks for you or goes to a local firewood buyer; the rest chips. We sort as we go rather than burning everything in a smoky pile like it's 1975.
Land Clearing Pricing (2026)
Per-acre clearing ranges swing harder than any other service we quote, because "an acre" in Fairview can mean open second-growth or an impenetrable rhodo jungle. As honest ballparks:
| Situation | Typical range | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Light brush / open saplings, per acre | $1,500–$3,500 | Machine + chipper, few days |
| Dense second-growth hardwood, per acre | $3,500–$8,000 | Selective marking, felling, skidding, chipping |
| Rhododendron / mountain thicket, per acre | $4,000–$9,000 | Grub-and-mulch work |
| Homesite package (footprint + driveway + yard) | $5,000–$15,000 | Quoted on walk-through with your builder |
Every clearing job gets a site walk and a written quote — per-acre numbers above are for budgeting, not promises. If your parcel needs a forestry mulher, we subcontract that at cost with no markup games.
